NOTE: Due to fixed classroom seating, 50 is the maximum number of students for this course. Priority is given to department majors in 4th and 3rd years. It will not be possible to add extra students. Please plan accordingly during course selection.
This course offers an introduction to the poetry and prose of the Romantic period with close attention to the literary text. Major poets to be studied include Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Shelley, Keats; works in prose include selections from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and essays by Charles Lamb and Thomas De Quincey. Emphasis will be placed on the complex literary and philosophical questions raised by Romantic writers and the influence of post-Enlightenment thought on modernity. Students considering this course should be prepared for a certain degree of abstract thinking and interpretive difficulty. |
